Mike Mangan has been helping organizations improve safety, leadership, and culture for over 30 years. He brings a practical approach and evidence-based interventions to improving performance in a way that is both efficient and effective for the long term.
- Over the past year, Mike designed and implemented culture change engagements for the trading arm of a large multi-national oil and gas firm. This work involved pinpointing key behaviors for success, coaching leaders, and conducting observation and feedback sessions resulting in a measurable 10% improvement in commodity team functioning on targeted competencies.
- Mike has also held significant solution development roles in which he has created innovative approaches to improve safety and leadership. For example:
- Developed a practical application of human error research for frontline workers resulting in 46% fewer injuries and $1m reduction in worker compensation costs.
- Led the design and implementation of a sustainable leadership development program that has resulted in 20%+ reductions in injury rates in industries as diverse as food processing, shipping, and airline baggage handling.
- Designed interventions targeted to the analysis and reduction of serious injuries and fatalities which, in one shipyard study, resulted in a 41% reduction in serious events.
- Mike is a seasoned and Board Certified Executive Coach, having worked with over 100 supervisors, managers, and executives to help them understand their own strengths and opportunities and to collaboratively determine practical and specific actions for sustainable improvement.
- Mike has worked with government agencies including the FAA, FRA, USMC, and Amtrak, as well as private sector clients industries as diverse as chemicals, healthcare, metals, petroleum, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, rail, shipping, and utilities, to name just a few.
- Previously, Mike was an officer in the US Marine Corps, where he was responsible for the training and readiness of 300 Marines and as a Platoon Commander responsible for preparing his Air Defense platoon for combat.
- Mike holds a Master’s and Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Ohio University and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame.
