In 2010, a group of organizations decided to work with Dr. Krause to look into why fatal injury rates across organizations and industries had stopped declining and were sometimes even increasing, while recordable injury rates had improved consistently over the decades. This was a disturbing trend. It meant that the things we were all doing to reduce workplace injuries were working for minor injuries but they were not working for Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs). It meant that we needed to rethink how we were approaching safety.
Your company is spending significant resources on safety improvement. If all of that effort is reducing minor injuries but not reducing Serious Injuries and Fatalities, something is fundamentally wrong. Something must be understood and addressed in a different way. Despite the excellent work that has been done in the last 5 years leading to new insights into workplace safety, there remains much to learn. Technology is improving. Data are improving. Learnings from individual incidents are increasing and that generates great potential to learn.
At Krause Bell Group, we are continuing the excellent work started by that original group of organizations to discover even more effective ways to prevent SIFs. We invite our clients to study, collaborate, network, and add to our knowledge and understanding of injury and fatality prevention in today’s organizations. We organize innovation groups to pool data, collaborate, network, and improve our knowledge and understanding of safety issues. Clients who participate in our innovation groups will have direct access to our findings and the tools and materials that come out of our work.
We are currently offering the following innovation groups:
- SIF North America (in progress)
- SIF North America, Phase 2 (starting October, 2016)
- SIF Europe (starting April, 2016)
- 7 Insights North America (starting July, 2016)
- SIF Asia Pacific (starting October, 2016)
2. Gather Data
Does the idea of another 360 survey send your managers and supervisors running for the hills? Despite the abundance of leadership assessments, there is a massive shortage of feedback delivered on the right things, at the right time, and in the right way to stimulate learning and adaptation.
At Krause Bell Group, we develop leadership assessments that are designed to deliver practical, timely, and productive feedback. Our 25 years’ experience developing and validating observational assessments, 360 instruments, self-assessments, tests, and simulations lend versatility to our approach. We can help you better understand the data you already have, or assist with gathering more.
Our customizable assessment tools include:
- Safety Leadership Assessment Situations™
A scenario-based tool to help evaluate safety leadership in challenging situations

3. Develop Strategy
So you want to improve safety systems, leadership, or culture in your organization: Do you have the support you need from the very top? Do the most influential managers and individuals in your organization truly understand that investing in your safety strategy will help them achieve their long term goals? And if so, are they prepared to drive change within their organizations? Do they have the understanding, motivation, tools, and information that they need? Do you have a mechanism to sustain improvements over the long term? That is what we are here for – to help you with a strategic plan to solve these issues.
Developing safety leadership in your organization can take many forms. If you have an established safety leadership program, you may need to reach a new audience or offer new content and ideas. You may need to educate on Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention. You may have people who would benefit from new insights and understanding or your need could extend to an entire organization. If your goal is to develop and sustain safety leadership over time, then you will need to build capability and possibly align systems within your organization. Krause Bell Group is here to provide coaching, training, consulting and materials to help.
