VIRTUAL MASTERCLASS
Onboarding New Supervisors: What Every New Leader Needs to Know About Building a Safe Work Environment
Spring Session: January-April 2026
Fall Session: September-December 2026
Virtual Masterclass Overview
Our Virtual Masterclass “Onboarding New Supervisors: What Every New Leader Needs to Know About Building a Safe Work Environment” is designed to help new supervisors prioritize safety as they navigate the challenges of leading a team, especially when they are new to the role and their team members are more experienced.
Virtual Masterclass Structure
Each Masterclass consists of four, 3-hour long, virtual modules conducted over consecutive months. Each module covers specific leadership and safety fundamentals using real-world examples, simple practices, and pragmatic strategies that can be implemented immediately.
- Module 1 “The ABCs of Leadership”: introduces key behaviors for leaders, such as setting clear expectations, enabling performance, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and coaching for sustainable performance.
- Module 2 “Safety Fundamentals”: outlines essential points related to workplace safety, including hazards, exposure, serious injury and fatalities (SIF), and the hierarchy of controls. It emphasizes the importance of SIF precursors, high-risk activities, and controls. Common safety systems like Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), pre-task risk assessments, and equipment inspections are discussed. The module also covers safety measurement and dashboarding, detailing the supervisor’s role in ensuring these systems are effective.
- Module 3 “Sources of Error and Injury”: addresses the phases of human action where mistakes and errors occur, along with mitigation steps. It highlights common leadership decision biases and self-check mechanisms.
- Module 4 “Building a Safe Team”: outlines seven research-based drivers of effective teamwork, including team skills, cooperation, coordination, communication quality, aligned expectations, conditions of procedural justice, and coaching.
