In this video, David Libby shares his thoughts about Behavior-Based Safety. Many companies tend to look at behavior as a way to find fault – discouraging employees from openly discussing what happened when things went wrong. Watch our thoughts on how these situations should be seen as learning opportunities.
I concur with your approach to behavior based safety. In my experience I have found that safe behavior can’t be regulated, legislated or mandated. It either comes from within our being; it is part of our culture or it will never achieve our goal of a safe workplace.
Thanks for your comment Roger – well said!
This is exactly the culture we’re trying to foster in our plant but it goes against everything in our nature. So, it requires sustained reinforcement and different way to measure our safety progress. Now, when we do a behavior observation it’s not a coaching moment but a series of questions in order to LEARN how and why the “work as done” is different than the “work as imagined “.
Thanks for your comment Jim – glad to hear how you’re handling it!
David – We just recently connected on LinkedIn – Thank you – As a long time safety advocate you articulate a good message – I’m learning everyday – I like to advocate getting organizations to just regularly talk about safety topics – once in a habit – Learning observations are realized.
