Darryl C. Hill, Ph.D., has a B.S., Occupational Safety (Iowa State University), M.S., Hazardous Waste Management (Wayne State University), MBA (Southern New Hampshire University) and Ph.D., Educational Leadership (Oakland University). He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP). 

  • Hill has over 35 years of experience in safety, health, and environmental management. Darryl was recently Senior Vice President, Safety and Security at First Student, Inc. First Student is the largest transportation solutions provider in North America. In this capacity, he oversaw the safety and security of more than 5 million students daily and 60,000 employees. Also, Darryl has served in senior environmental, health, and safety roles at ABB, Johnson Controls, and Abbott. ABB received an EHS Today America’s Safest Companies Award under his leadership. Additionally, First Student was the first and only transportation company to be a finalist for the prestigious Campbell Award for EHS and operational excellence.
  • Currently, Darryl is a strategic advisor for Rhythm Innovations to provide guidance to develop and promote transformative risk and compliance management processes through automated workflows, advanced reporting, AI-driven insights, and enhanced resilience.
  • Hill is EHS Program Director and Lecturer at Oakland University, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in construction safety, environmental standards, safety training methods and accident investigation since 1996. 
  • Darryl served as American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Society President during 2010-11 which was the 100th anniversary for the organization. He also received the highest Society honor as Fellow in 2013. Darryl is currently on the National Safety Council (NSC) Board of Directors and serves on the Finance Committee.
  • He was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve a 3-year term on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Board of Scientific Counselors.

He is a sought-after speaker on many topics, including leadership, organizational and safety culture, operational excellence, performance metrics, and management systems.
